In our annual 2018 Year in Review post, we take a look back and see what we accomplished over the past 12 months. We’ll touch on both professional and personal highlights, including major work milestones with our partners, welcoming new team members, events we attended, and a host of feel-good moments for our Geeks. And before we go, we’d like to wish you a happy and healthy New Year in 2019–there are more great things to come!
MARTECH ENABLEMENT TEAM GOES LIVE
Last year, GeekHive President/CEO Peter Ladka announced the formation of our martech consultation practice. This year, he expanded the team around Martech Practice Lead, Dave Cardine, adding three digital strategists and a creative strategist. All of the martech team members are highly skilled and experienced in their respective disciplines, in order to better serve our customers’ ever-developing martech needs.

KEY CASE STUDIES PUBLISHED
We kicked off 2018 publishing two major case studies showcasing GeekHive’s capabilities, with distinctly different challenges posed by our respective clients.
First up was A Custom WordPress Redesign for SleepSells, a content management site for Serta Simmons, one of the top players in the mattress industry, used for associate training, and created in conjunction with our agency partner, three.
The second case study put the spotlight on our strategic technical consulting: Martech Strategy for a Global Publishing Powerhouse. In this case, the client had best in class tools and the individual skill sets to use them, but operated in a decentralized manner, creating siloed people and processes that hindered their ability to properly integrate them for best optimization of the business needs in order to create a cohesive, personalized experience for customers.
GEEKHIVE LAUNCHES DIGITAL MATURITY ASSESSMENT
To help support our clients’ journey toward digital transformation, we launched our Digital Maturity Assessment. It’s a series of questions designed for us to learn as much as possible about our clients’ marketing tools, personnel, and operations. Using the data collected from this DMA allows us to establish a digital maturity baseline, which can help us set expectations and understand where you want to go as an organization, so we can then make our recommendations to best help you to get there.
GEEKHIVE CEO/PRESIDENT PETER LADKA PRESENTS AT DREAMFORCE
In this blog post, we run down GeekHive CEO/President Peter Ladka’s address to the Salesforce Dreamforce event, where he gave a presentation on the benefits of Salesforce as it relates to small business owners. Peter is a champion of Salesforce’s capabilities–thanks to its customizable nature, the ability to scale up, and the artificial intelligence functionality that can help users optimize their marketing operations–and he’s uniquely positioned to not only discuss how Salesforce can be leveraged by small businesses, but how it can help your small business grow and get to the next level. GEEKHIVE HIT WITH A ‘BABY-POCALYPSE’
Love was in the air around the halls of GeekHive in 2018! Six Geeks welcomed a grand total of NINE babies this year (give or take): Director of Marketing Shannon Brennan-Cressey led the way with her triplets (Brennan, Emerson, and Avery); Tech Lead Tim Leverett welcomed twin girls, Hailey and Madison; Tech Lead Phil Azzi announced the arrival of daughter Willow Jayne; Developer Drew Garman was blessed with daughter Rowan; LAMP Practice Lead Drew Nackers and his wife are expecting in March 2019; and Tech Lead Ian Poley’s wife is due…any minute now! The next generation of Geeks is well on its way to world domination!
THE GEEKHIVE FAMILY GROWS, TOO!
We’ve been experiencing unprecedented growth this year, and the number of new hires we brought on confirms it: 19 and counting! Here’s a snapshot of ALL the new full-time employees who’ve joined the ranks this year, in something resembling chronological order: Anthony Pinzone, Jeff Palopoli, Brandon Mosley, Andrew Serwin, Nikki Alessandrino, Ted DuFrane, Ian Poley, Jim King, Laz Cabañas, Felix Sorgho, Ryan LeCluyse, Joe Oh, Alex Sayyah, Kathleen Callahan, William Sullivan, Meghan Zambrano, and Cara Steinberg, plus, our two co-ops, Analia Mok and Kyle Cutler. WHEW!
JOHN RAPPEL NAMED SITECORE TECHNICAL MVP
Our .NET Practice Lead John Rappel scored an impressive professional development milestone when Sitecore named him as a Technical MVP. John has been a regular fixture in the Sitecore developer community for years, not only authoring Sitecore-related blogs for GeekHive.com but contributing to the Sitecore Slack and social communities, as well as penning his own Sitecore blog, SitecoreRap.com.
GEEKHIVE NAMES PRACTICE LEADS
In order to help manage the big-picture goals of GeekHive’s various development teams, we created a practice lead role within the organization to offer expertise that will grow our teams and support clients within each of our key technology focus areas. Part team leader, part discipline expert, the practice leads serve as support backstops in the event of a technical challenge, while overseeing or leading the various projects they’re assigned to on the client side. GeekHive’s practice leads are Dave Cardine (Martech), Justin Firth (UX/Front End), Jeff Palopoli (PMO), Drew Nackers (LAMP), Mike Shatalov (QMS), and John Rappel (.NET).
GEEKHIVE TEAMS UP WITH SITECORE FOR AMERISOURCEBERGEN CASE STUDY
In this case study, Sitecore showcased how GeekHive leveraged their tools to support our client, AmerisourceBergen Corporation, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the United States, and a perennial top performer on the Fortune 500 list, to move towards achieving their digital transformation efforts. GeekHive’s team, led by Jay Oliver, Michael McDermott, and John Rappel, helped ABC by integrating Sitecore XP to improve user experience, streamline content management, and empower 24 business units across the organization. Special thanks to Sitecore for the mention, and to our client, ABC for the opportunity to assist them in finding solutions for their martech challenges.
PETER LADKA NAMED TO BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE HALL OF FAME
GeekHive President/CEO Peter Ladka has a philanthropic cause very near and dear to his heart: helping kids with special needs to play adaptive sports. He founded the non-profit Beautiful People in 2008, and after a decade of following through on his mission, the organization honored Peter with its Hall of Fame Award at this year’s 10th annual awards celebration. GEEKHIVE’S INAUGURAL COMPANY DAY CELEBRATION
This four-day mini-summit brought all of our Geeks together from across the country, as the remote teams met with their on-site cohorts at the GeekHive HQ in Warwick, NY. The event kicked off with a day-long workshop on a number of topics–peer communication, representation in tech, etc.–then gave way to a weekend of team-building, socializing, and spending face-to-face time with one another. It was a great way to celebrate each other and our group accomplishments, interact with new and remote team members, and build company morale.
The largest martech convention on the East Coast, Martech East played host to major brands such as Apple, Facebook, Google, 3M, and many more. According to Program Chair Scott Brinker, “Marketing, technology, and management were silos of the past. Marketing technology management–MarTech–is the fabric of the future.” That sentiment has been directly shaping the direction of our company this year, by expanding our martech practice to better serve our clients’ growing martech needs.
GeekHive joined the over 3,000 Sitecore developers, marketers and IT professionals who attended the biggest Sitecore-related trade show in the country. GeekHive CEO/President Peter Ladka gave an address on the last day of the event, making the case for how marketing technology–and in our specific case Martech Enablement–can help create better customer experiences, streamline marketing operations, and increase overall revenue. This incremental, data-driven approach also helps show the value of your marketing efforts through robust, multichannel analytics, a necessary feature when it comes time to show the return on your martech investment (ROMI).
CX DAY CELEBRATION
CX Day is a globally recognized event day intended to celebrate those who work in the customer experience business. To get in on the fun, and stress the importance of creating excellent customer experiences within the organization, GeekHive holds an internal competition and asks the employees to vote on the best CX ambassador from our company. This year’s CX Day MVP was Drew Nackers, our very own LAMP Practice Lead.
GEEKHIVE DEBUTS PROJECT GRANDEUR
Our Martech Team faced a challenge: create a demo product for potential clients combining core elements of a full martech stack to use as a showcase for the Martech Team’s technical capabilities. Project Grandeur was the result and does just that. It helps a marketing organization gather data and serve up a personalized customer experience, all in real-time. It made quite a splash at Acquia Engage in November when it was presented to a VIP audience of CMOs from a range of industries. The assembled audience was captivated by the potential functionality upgrades and customer experience improvements the integration of these tools could mean for their respective marketing organizations.
