Meet the Geek: Brandon Mosley, Creative Strategist

In our latest profile, we’ll introduce you to Brandon Mosley, the Creative Strategist for our Martech Enablement consultancy team. What does he do, how did he get into it, and why is he so “strategic”? The answers to those questions and more await…let’s Meet the Geek!
Brandon Mosley, The Professional
Can you share a little bit about your professional background?
BRANDON: My core background is in UI and graphic design. My career started in higher education, but I have since worked in agency, startup, and pharma-tech environments. Not including the work I did prior to college, I’ve been designing responsive websites, print collateral, brand identities, and other digital assets for over 14 years. (Damn, I’m old!) I have also worked in front- and back-end code, which has put me right on the line between creative and development. That’s part of the reason why devs love me!
What gets you excited to get out bed and work?
Creative trends, the emergence of user experience (UX) in web and mobile design, and the advancements in digital technology excite me. Solving problems keeps me driven.
What skills/expertise do you bring to your work at GeekHive?
Web/UI and graphic design, user experience, and strategy.
What does an Engagement Manager do at GeekHive?
I’ll be working on user experience (UX) and design strategies for client martech initiatives. Projects will include wireframes, which essentially are blueprints for how a website will be structured, as well as the visual aspects of these digital projects. Can’t wait to dive in!
When did you first realize you loved technology?
As an art and science nerd, I was able to find the best of both worlds after I taught myself how to code HTML, just as AOL was taking off. (Dating myself!) I got lost in my science kits, but I particularly took to taking machines apart and hacking video games to study the graphic and audio assets. However, it wasn’t until high school when I realized a career in graphic design was possible after I took a class in Adobe Illustrator. The rest is history.
Why do you like designing?
The best thing about design is that there’s a tangible or visual finished product, but design nowadays is a living and breathing entity that changes and can be improved over time, which takes the pressure off things needing to be “perfect.” It’s a wonderful feeling to always have the opportunity to improve your work.
What is your “sweet spot” at work?
I’m at my peak with a clear set of instructions and a really good house remix.

Fun fact about Brandon:
I had a music production stint during my early adult life. I composed unofficial remixes from songs by Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and a handful of video games, a few of which were actually played in clubs. I also had my own radio show in college.
If you weren’t GeekHive’s Creative Strategist, what would you be?
A combination of an EDM (dance music) DJ or music producer and a full-time artist. I sometimes miss using my hands to create.
What are your interests outside of work?
Genealogical research, recreational writing, traveling, photography, machine sewing, and cooking.
What makes you geek out?
The inner workings of machines. The technological advancements of household appliances. Antique hunting. And finding new discoveries in my genealogical research.
What was your favorite subject in school?
Art class, hands down!
Ten plants, two of whom are Miss Tish and Miss Till (they are divas).
Any pet peeves?
Inefficient work processes and getting caught up in the minutia of a problem with no movement toward finding a solution. That, and my alarm clock.
How do you like to spend your Friday nights?
A “Shark Tank” marathon, a home-cooked meal, and time spent with a special person! Corny, right?
Favorite thing to do on a rainy day:
Machine sewing with “Real Housewives” on in the background.
Describe yourself in 3 words:
Bold. 16-Bit. Antialiased. (We had to look this one up!)
Iced tea (all about Turkish rosehip tea).
A close tie between Nepalese and Filipino food, but I will not say no to Indian or Chinese.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Don’t let people surprise you.
What accomplishment are you the proudest of?
I am the first college graduate on my dad’s side of the family; that has to count for something!
What cartoon character best represents you?
Probably Bugs Bunny. He’s so sarcastic and SASSY!

What’s the worst job you ever had?
My worst job would be any position I’ve held that did not utilize my skills or nurture my potential. I’ll just leave it at that.
