Geek Profile: Tracey Robinson, Project Manager
March 6, 2018
One of our favorite types of posts to do are those that highlight our team members so that our clients can get to know them a little better and so anyone who may want to join our team can learn a bit more about what working here is like. Getting to know your team members helps to build your working relationship and trust between teams. In this post, we’ll introduce you to Tracey Robinson, one of GeekHive’s wonderful project managers.
Why did you choose project management for your profession?
Tracey: I’m always drawn to a project, I look for things to be done and do them. I also have leadership qualities, so I organize things that need to be done and figure out how to do it. In my opinion, project management is more of a lifestyle than a career choice. I’m type A and like to be in control, so I fell into it based on my interests and strengths.
Why did you get involved in the tech sector?
My first position out of college was at a marketing technology company. One thing I like about tech is that it doesn’t take a lot to reach a lot of people, you can work on a small team but you are building things that so many people use and that will help them, especially if you work with big name clients like we do. At my last job, I could see millions of people hitting a site we built monthly and it really drills home how impactful it is.
What did you do before this?
I worked at another technology services company specializing in mobile website development. I was there for 7 years, during the mobile web boom. It was such a rapidly growing industry, very fast moving, dealing with high profile projects. I really enjoyed the pace and working with the brands we supported.
What’s your favorite thing about working at GeekHive?
Working with smart, fun-loving people who are open to new ideas and ways of working. GeekHive is proof that small teams can do big things.
Advice to other project managers who want to get involved in the technology industry:
I studied marketing so much of the technical knowledge I have I learned hands-on the job. My advice would be to ask questions and don’t be afraid to ask “stupid” questions. I try to understand something enough to speak to it, and leave the rest to the experts on the team.
What is your “sweet spot” at work?
I love bringing people together, whether its representing our company through an important client meeting or gathering feedback to reach a decision. I’m good at taking complex requirements, and many moving pieces and putting together a clear-cut roadmap the team can follow so everyone has a plan of action and their questions answered. A big strength of mine is my ability to get results out of people to keeping things moving in the right direction.
What advice do you have for others who may be interested in working at GeekHive?

- Don’t be afraid to be yourself – let your inner geek shine, be positive, be professional.
- Listen to others, your co-workers are really intelligent so take a moment to absorb before responding.

3 Fun facts about you:
- My family used to own a rafting and canoeing company on the Delaware river so I spent my summers on the water in Sullivan county. When I got older I worked as a river tour guide for big groups.
- I was in show choir in high school, I like to sing and dance, and I was in drama club and the school musicals.
- I have a one and a half year old daughter and I love being a mom.
What makes you a geek?
I’m not sure I am one! But I do like to go to yard sales. When the weather is warm, I look through the local paper and craigslist for antique sales and yard sales and hit them up on the weekends. I love collecting retro vintage items and mid-century furniture.
