How to View Raw Values in Sitecore CMS
February 15, 2017
This is the thirty-fourth post in a series about learning how to use and develop for Sitecore CMS; it is the follow-up post to “How to Show the Folder Editor in Sitecore CMS”. In this “How to” post I cover how to view raw values in Sitecore CMS.
What Are Raw Values?
In Sitecore, field values are all stored as strings. Even if the field appears to contain a number or date or item reference, behind-the-scenes the value that Sitecore stores is just text.
For text fields, the values are straightforward. The text is the text is the text. For other field types, the fields need to contain data stored in a specific format so that the values can be retrieved as structured data.
For example, an image field stores the reference to the image and any custom properties as an XML
Viewing Raw Values
To view raw values you’re going to need a field that has value with structured data.
Set the “Logo” field to one of the images in the media library.
Save the changes.
Now you can enable raw values to see the data that drives the image field.
Select the “View” tab in the ribbon.
Check the “Raw values” checkbox in the “View” section of the “View” tab.
The image field will turn into a text field showing the raw data for the field.
Unchecking the “Raw values” checkbox will stop displaying the raw field values and return Sitecore to its default behavior.
