Meet Michelle banzer, geekhive's newest geek

Meet Michelle Banzer! One of the newest developers at GeekHive,  Michelle brings with her a wealth of knowledge in development with a special focus on Sitecore CMS. You’ll be hearing a lot from her, so take a moment to get to know this rock star tech Geek!

Why did you get involved in technology?

Michelle: I taught myself HTML in middle school, back in the day of Geocities and Angelfire, and really liked it. Once I reached high school I enrolled in a math, science, and tech program that was offered, even though I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do yet. This gave me an opportunity to try different things out and I found that I loved my tech classes because each project was different, I was constantly learning something new, and never got bored. My favorite part was the problem-solving aspect and challenge these classes presented. I also loved the feeling of accomplishment that came with completing something and seeing it come to fruition. This experience was what got me started on the path to becoming a developer.

What did you do before working at GeekHive?

Michelle: I worked at an agency in NYC doing Sitecore development work.

What is your “sweet spot” at work?

Michelle: Sitecore CMS

What got you involved in the Sitecore community originally?

Michelle: Sitecore was actually the first thing I was exposed to out of school and I found that I like the content management aspect of it. I enjoy learning how to engineer and strategize with the content to bring the most value out of it as possible. Sitecore’s digital marketing suite and analytics make it cutting-edge and exciting and there’s always something to learn.

3 Fun Facts about Michelle:
1- I’m training my dog in agility.
2- I grew up speaking, reading, and writing in Vietnamese which has helped me with learning languages in general.
3- I like outdoor activities like camping, hiking, fishing. I think it’s important to take breaks from technology and travel to new places and experience new things.

What makes you a Geek?

Michelle: Plenty! There are different types of geekiness, for me, it’s the little things. I geek out and get really excited over office supplies, organizing, and work projects. I used to love playing video games and older computer games – Civilization, Age of Empires, Mario Cart, but I have less and less time to play, unfortunately.

I’m also very DIY arts and crafty. Because our job is so technical, I like using the creative side of my brain when I’m off the clock, so I do cross stitching and check out Pinterest for ideas on projects where I can make things myself.

Who’s your favorite video game character?

Michelle: Princess Peach or Yoshi

How would you describe your style?

Michelle: I keep things simple. I look for things that make me feel happy and gravitate towards colorful items.  I work from home and I’m dressed down a lot so I also like an excuse to dress up. I’d honestly say I’m pretty versatile.

Any words of wisdom for other women who want to get involved in the technology industry:

Michelle: It’s an awesome field to be in.The demand for programmers is higher than the amount of people going to school for it so it’s a good time to break into the industry. Every project is different, it’s never stagnant, and there is a lot of flexibility in this field which is especially great for women who want to start families.

I know it’s really intimidating since there aren’t a lot of women in the industry yet, but I think as a whole, anyone (male or female) who’s newly starting is intimidated because there’s so much to learn. Just know, that everyone is feeling the same way.  So don’t give up, you have to start somewhere (with anything you do) and as long as you keep at it, you’ll get the experience you need to gain confidence in your abilities.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Michelle: If you do something you love, then you’ll never have to work a day in your life. The only way to truly be successful is to love what you do.

Welcome to the team Michelle! Meet the rest of the team here.
