How to Move Items in Sitecore CMS

In this post, GeekHive goes back to basics, covering the various ways items can be moved in Sitecore. Sometimes, items are created in the wrong place, or content needs to be restructured. Moving items helps to keep Sitecore organized without needing to recreate items.

By the way, we have nearly 30 tutorials about learning how to use and develop for Sitecore CMS. Be sure to check the others out, especially my post, How to Create Custom Item Bucket Rules in Sitecore CMS.

From the Ribbon

Select the item to move in the Content Editor.

On the Home tab of the ribbon, click the “Move To” button in the “Operations” section.

The “Move Item To” modal will appear.

Select the new parent for the item and click the “Move” button on the bottom right of the modal.

From the Context Menu

Right-click the item to move in the Content Editor to open a context menu.

In the “Copying” menu of the context menu, select the “Move To” option.

The “Move Item To” modal will appear again.

Select the new parent for the item and click the “Move” button on the bottom right of the modal.

Drag & Drop

Click and drag the item in the Content Editor.

Hovering over another item in the content tree will highlight the background of the item.

Dropping the item will open a confirmation dialog to move the item.

Clicking OK will move the item.

Check back next week for the next tutorial. And, as always, if you have any questions or if there’s something you’d like to see covered, drop us a line!
