How to Copy Items in Sitecore CMS

Welcome back to our series about learning how to use and develop for Sitecore CMS. In this edition, I’ll cover the various ways items can be copied. Copying items is convenient when many similar items need to be created. All field values and versions on the item being copied are transferred to the new item, which can be useful when forking an item into multiple items.

BTW, this post is the follow-up to How to Move Items in Sitecore CMS. We have nearly 30 tutorials and tips available, so be sure to check them out at our blog, The Buzz.

“Copy To” in the Ribbon

Select the item you wan to copy in the Content Editor.

On the Home tab of the ribbon, click the “Copy To” button in the “Operations” section.

The “Copy Item To” modal will appear.

Select the parent for the new copy of the item and click the “Copy” button on the bottom right of the modal.

Note

If you select the same parent as the original item, the new copy will be prefixed with “Copy of,” otherwise the new item will use the same name as the original item.

“Copy To” in the Context Menu

Right-click the item to copy in the content tree to open a context menu.

In the “Copying” menu of the context menu, select the “Copy To” option.

The “Copy Item To” modal will appear again.

Select the parent for the new copy of the item and click the “Copy” button on the bottom right of the modal.

“Duplicate” in the Ribbon

Select the item to copy in the Content Editor.

On the Home tab of the ribbon, click the “Duplicate” button in the “Operations” section.

A prompt will appear asking for the name of the new item.

Provide a new name and click OK. The new copy will be created as a sibling of the original item.

“Duplicate” in the Context Menu

Right-click the item to copy in the content tree to open a context menu.

Select the “Duplicate” option.

A prompt will appear again asking for the name of the new item.

Provide a new name and click OK. The new copy will be created as a sibling of the original item.
