How to Configure Insert Options in Sitecore CMS

This is the nineteenth in a series of posts about learning how to use and develop for Sitecore CMS; it is the follow-up post to “How to Customize Field Validation in Sitecore CMS”. In this “How to” post I will be covering how to configure insert options in Sitecore CMS.

Configuring insert options allows content editors to quickly and easily select the appropriate template type when creating items or folders.

This simple change will help to save time for content editors by reducing the number of steps necessary to create new pages and sub-pages.

Insert options may be changed for any Sitecore item, as the data is stored on a standard field. This also means that an item’s insert options are inherited from its template’s __Standard Values. While it’s certianly possible to override a single item’s insert options, it’s often more effective to set the insert options on a template.

There are two ways to assign new insert options on an item.

From the Ribbon

Select the item whose insert options you’d like to change. In this example I’ve selected /sitecore/templates/User Defined/New template/__Standard Values.

Click the “Assign” button in the “Insert Options” section of the “Configure” tab in the ribbon.

A modal will open showing a treelist where templates may be selected.

Select a template to include in the insert options. In this example I’ve selected /Templates/User Defined/New template.

Click “OK” to accept the changes and close the dialog.

“New template” will now be available as an insert option for “New template” items. This can be seen in the “Insert” section on the “Home” tab of the ribbon.
