How to Configure Item Icons in Sitecore CMS

This is the eighth in a series of posts about learning how to use and develop for Sitecore CMS; it is the follow-up post to “How to Create Folders in Sitecore CMS”. In this “How to” post I will be covering how to configure item icons in Sitecore CMS.

In Sitecore, icons are often used to quickly tell items apart by their various different template types. Articles might use a red icons, while listing pages might use blue. The icon set on an item can be seen in the content tree, as well as at the top of the content editor when the item is selected.

From the Ribbon

Select the item whose icon you want to change, select the “Configure” tab in the ribbon, and click on the “Icon” button in the “Appearance” section of the ribbon:

A dropdown menu will appear with quick-access buttons to select recently used icons.

Clicking on an icon in the quick-access dropdown will change the icon for the item and automatically save the change.

Alternatively, clicking on the “More Icons” button at the bottom of the dropdown will open an extended list of the default Sitecore icons.

Selecting the “Icons” tab on the left side of the “Icon” dialog will open the full list of default Sitecoer icons. The select field on the top-right of the dialog can be used to change between various different categories of icons.

After selecting an icon in the dialog, clicking “OK” will update the item’s icon field and automatically save the change.

From the Icon Field

Select the item whose icon you want to change. In the content editor, expand the item’s “Appearance” field group. If you don’t see the “Appearance” field group, you may need to toggle the setting to view “Standard Fields”.
