How to Create Items in Sitecore CMS

This is the sixth in a series of posts about learning how to use and develop for Sitecore CMS; it is the follow-up post to “How to Manage Desktop Shortcuts in Sitecore CMS”. In this “How to” post I will be covering how to create items in the Sitecore CMS Content Editor. Managing Sitecore items from the Page Editor is highly context-dependent, and will be covered in a later post.

From the Ribbon

After opening the Sitecore Content Editor, select an item in the content tree. Items created will be added as children of the selected item.

The “Insert” section on the “Home” tab of the ribbon contains a list of buttons. These buttons can be used to create a specific template type. At the bottom of the list is an option to “Insert form Template” which is useful for creating any additional templates not included in the insert options.

Template Shortcut in Insert Options

Click on the button for the desired template.

A modal dialog will ask for a name for the new item.

Clicking the “OK” button in the modal will create and select the item with the specified name.

Insert from Template in Insert Options

Select the “Home” item again.

Click on the “Insert from Template” button in the “Insert” section of the ribbon.

An “Insert from Template” modal dialog will open so that a template can be selected from the Templates section of the content tree.

After selecting a template, and modifying the item name, click “Insert” and a new item will be created from the specified template with the given name.

From the Context Menu

The right-click context menu can be used on items to quickly insert new items without needing to select the item first.

Right-click on an item in Sitecore to open the context menu. Items created will be added as children of the item that was clicked.

Hover or click on the “Insert” group in the context menu. A submenu will appear with the same insert options as were shown in the ribbon.

Just like the ribbon, the listed options will allow the creation of new items from specific pre-selected templates, and the “Insert from Template” option allows the creation of a new item from any template.

From a Folder

Folder items are configured to display a folder editor in the main editor panel. This tab will show the available insert options, and list all child items so they can easily be accessed.

Clicking on a template listed in the “Options” list will work the same as the ribbon and item context menu.

When the folder contains child items, an “Items in the Folder” section will be shown.
