Tonidoplug

I’m 99.99% sure I’m going to be purchasing one of these in the next week or so.  The Tonidoplug promises to be a great little device acting as a file server, cloud server, torrent management system, backup solution and much more.

Plug the tiny device directly into a wall socket, or use the power cable supplied if you chosoe not to place the device near an outlet, then attach it to your network.  It can be configured via a web interface and once you attach some storage via USB you’re up and running.  1.2Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM and 512MB in board storage to get started with.  Right now I don’t have much in the way of external storage but hope to lay my hands on a drive or an enclosure for one of my old IDE drives very soon.  When I have the device I’ll likely post some pics and video.

**Update – 4th April**
Purchased the TonidoPlug yesterday. They are currently out of stock due to “unprecedented high demand” but will ship end of April. Pics and review to follow.

Hacking Exercises

Rediscovered this site containing hacking exercises. After completing the 5 warm ups one is rewarded with a shell account to the main site where the rest of the puzzles are to be found. The first 2 were fairly easy and after much head scratching I figured out the other 3. Try it yourself and let me know how you get on. I’ll be giving the shell exercises a go over the next week.

Join the Hive

As you may have noticed this site is pretty blank.  In the past I have not had any use for Geekhive.com and recently have considered giving up on the site.  Until that time comes do you have any ideas you’d like to share?  Would you like to contribute content to the site?

Register for a Geekhive Contributer account to start today.  Feel free to contact me via the contact link on the About Page.  I can also be found on Google Talk with the same email address and my Blackberry PIN is 31536750.  First order of business would be the creation of a logo for Geekhive.  Let’s have some colour.  Perhaps a honeycomb feel for that whole hive vibe preferably with a white background to match the minimalist look of the current site.  If you have any design work to offer then give me a yell.

The future of the site currently hangs in the balance but you never know.  Just in case it sticks around it would be nice to actually do something with it.

Thanks,

Matt.

Lifestream

I’ve added a Lifestream demo here.  Lifstream is a PHP app you can plugin to your site to display feeds of different sources from your online presence.
It supports twitter, flickr, buzz and regular RSS feeds.  Code can be downloaded from Sweetcron’s site.

If you’re a Google Fanboy like me or just like stumbling upon funny content every now again you;d do well to check out Google Reader Play.  Still in Beta, Google Reader Play pulls in the most recently posted popular media from all over the web and makes it available via a slideshow in one place.

WordPress for Blackberry

I’ve discovered WordPress for Blackberry.  A neat little app that will allow you to post content to your WordPress site, edit posts, include media saved on your phone and manage your content.  Go get it at the WordPress site’s download page.
