3-2-1 Backup

Something I’ve been taking more seriously these days is backup.  My music and video collection are replaceable but my photos of friends and family aren’t.  I’m now following the 3-2-1 Rule of thumb for backup of photos.

  • 3 copies of any important files
  • 2 different media types
  • 1 copy should be stored offsite

For my photos I store them on my hard drive, a removable drive and on Picasaweb.  In Picassa you can choose to make galleries private or public.  For $5 a year you can purchase 20GB storage from Google to be used for Gmail and Picassa.  The Picassa desktop software will scan your photo albums and offer you options for syncing to your online folder.  You can copy original size, reduced size, control bandwidth usage when syncing, etc.  Admittedly it can take some time for your first backup but after it’ll only sync the new files.

Well worth considering, especially if like me you have amassed a huge collection of pictures over the years.
